Forty years ago, a local musician came to Betsy Lewis, a member of the Unitarian Church, and said he wanted to start a classical concert series. Ken Hopper, the organist, agreed to help, and a committee was formed. Thus began Afternoon Music, which over the years has presented a wide selection of yet-to-be-known and well-known musicians. Programs were expanded to include jazz and a variety of singers and instrumentalists. The appreciative audiences and the marvel of the acoustics make Beacon a “Jewel of a Hall” for music lovers near and far.
